Schelling and the Wall of Gum

Tom Woodnut pointed me to this very physical illustration of Herd behaviour. On the wall of a nearby office folk seem to have taken to sticking their gum on the brickwork (see pic). Clearly one individual started this but others started to copy the behaviour they saw in front of them (maybe during smoke-breaks – ah, how I miss them…).

This is the point outlined in a much more articulate manner by Schelling in his classic book. Most of our lives consist of responding to a context which consists of other people responses to a context which consists of other peoples responses etc…

Put more simply, we do what we do mostly as a response to what we see others around us doing.
