Nice herd ad that Faris spotted.

Speak to me this afternoon, when the match is over…

There was a fabulous herd scene in Covent Garden on Wednesday afternoon. There were a few groups of Arsenal and PSV fans drinking outside, and one of the groups in blue produced a football. They were kicking it about, it ran loose, a Gunners fan got involved, and within about five minutes the ball was flying back and forth across the Piazza, with everyone from businessmen to babies, teenagers to street artists getting involved – and we’re talking fifty yard passes, each one accompanied by the rising cheer so beloved of football fans (wooooooh -hey!). Surreal enough a scene for it to feel like an (adidas) ad, but totally joyous to behold.
What was particularly fascinating from a Herd point of view was watching individuals who were initially holding back (in a very self-conscious fashion) gradually being subsumed into the mass instinct, and ultimately (for want of a better phrase) just fucking going with it. I wish I’d had a camera…
